FLORENCE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE – Press Release – 2/21/2017

may

On 2/21/2017 around 8:48 pm, I CPL B. Urquhart assisted CPL S. Keith on a traffic stop on I-95 southbound near the 1-63 mile marker.  CPL Keith conducted his business and the driver refused consent to search.  CPL Keith requested that I conduct a free-air sniff of the vehicle with my K-9 partner, Rico.  I retrieved K-9 Rico and walked to the front of the vehicle at around 9:01 pm.  K-9 Rico was started near the front passenger-side headlight and began to work counter clockwise around the vehicle.  Rico passed the front driver door heading towards the back, then had a head turn coming back to the seam between the front and back doors.  At that spot, Rico locked out, body stiffened, tail started wagging, laid down, and began staring intently at the seam (obvious change of behavior).  I continued walking and tried to get him to keep working around the vehicle but he pulled right back to that spot and resumed alerting on the vehicle.  Rico was rewarded and put up.  The vehicle was then searched by CPL Keith and SGT Spell.  Subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a large amount of US currency in a suitcase which the passenger had claimed.  After the subjects were detained, deputies later put three bags which were inside the car in a row outside on the ground.  K-9 Rico was run on the bags and Rico alerted to the middle bag which was the bag containing the money.  I got Rico to sniff the 3rd bag which he never reached but he returned back to the middle bag and alerted again.  K-9 Rico was rewarded and put up.

Officers then made contact with factory supervisors and located the vehicle in question. Permission was previously obtained from the owner of the property for law enforcement to be there to conduct the search.

Once officers located the vehicle, K9 Ofc. Cody Byrd and K9 Ester arrived on scene and began an open air sniff around the truck. After K9 Ester alerted on the vehicle, the owner and Lloyd Christopher Coleman, 50, Petersburg, was brought outside. A search of the vehicle found a clear glass smoking pipe with burnt residue inside the passenger side door along with a loaded handgun and a scale.

A search of Coleman’s property located various items including seven small baggies containing a white crystal substance, 4.03 grams in weight. In a lighter was another clear baggie containing a white crystal substance, 2.02 grams in weight. Both substances field tested positive for methamphetamine. Officers also located several other types of prescription pills.

Coleman was placed under arrest for Possession of Methamphetamine, Dealing in Methamphetamine, Possession of Paraphernalia, Carrying a Handgun Without a Permit, Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Possession of a Controlled Substance (x4), Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon. Scott County, IN Sheriff’s Office – Press Release
Deputy Shawn Mayer – 4/12/17

On Tuesday, April 11, 2017, Deputy Shawn Mayer stopped a Silver 2005 Mazda 6
for a license plate light being non-operational on I-65 Southbound near the
28mm. Upon making contact with the driver Deputy Mayer smelled a strange
odor coming from the vehicle. Deputy Mayer then returned to his commission
to check history.

Dispatch returned with information on the driver as being suspended on a
prior. Deputy Mayer then wrote a citation for the suspension and a warning
for the license plate light being non-operational as well. As Deputy Mayer
wrote the citations he observed the driver’s behavior while she sat in the
driver’s seat. The driver, being extremely fidgety and moving about the
passenger’s compartment made Deputy Mayer suspicious. Deputy Josh Watterson
arrived on scene to assist and Deputy Mayer requested Deputy Watterson have
the driver of the vehicle have a seat in his commission.

Deputy Mayer issued the citation to the driver, advised the driver the
vehicle was being towed, and requested she have a seat in Deputy Waterson’s
vehicle while a wrecker arrived on scene so she could make arrangements with
the tow driver. Deputy Mayer then began a vehicle inventory and smelled the
strong odor of perfume just being sprayed inside the cab area. Deputy Mayer
then began checking the vehicle in the center console area where the fidgety
behavior was taking place. At that time marijuana residue was located inside
the console. Subsequently the driver was taken into custody, her belongings
searched incident to arrest. Subsequently a mason jar with marijuana, small
pill bottle with marijuana, rolling papers, hemostats with a partially
smoked marijuana cigarette (all totaling 7.2g), and a large sum of US
Currency ($1972.00) was located in her belongings, as well as marijuana
residue located in the Mazda 6. The driver was then transported to the Scott
County Security Center for booking.

Officers went to the location and found out he had left. Officers passed a male matching Moore’s description while approaching the residence. The male had disappeared, but after I conducted a track with K-9 Sara, Moore was located hiding in the bed of a Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) pick-up. Moore was also found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine, a suspected methamphetamine pipe, and had digital scales in his bag which would indicate an intent to sell the contraband. Moore also had $263 in U.S. paper currency that was seized by this Officer for suspicion of it being proceeds from dealing in methamphetamine. GSH also requested trespassing charges against Moore and signed a complaint. Moore was arrested and taken to the Knox County Jail.
